A proud owner of the “Made in Great Britain” tag on every garment they make, John Smedley is a British brand through and through. Creating beautiful, high quality garments that are designed to last and distributed all over the world, they are a force to be reckoned with in the fashion industry.
Established in 1784 in a factory in Lea Mills, Derbyshire (where they still remain over 230 years later) they are the creators of the World’s Finest Knitwear and are the oldest manufacturing factory in the world.
In the 1950’s and 60’s they become the brand of choice for many famous faces, including, The Beatles, Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe and in 2013 they were granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment as a “Manufacturer of Fine Knitwear” by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a testament to their trusted quality.
Weaving modern design together with meticulous British workmanship, John Smedley’s luxe basics will take your casual game up a notch. A fact you may find interesting about John Smedley is that they are the creators of the original “Long Johns” creating history from the outset.
John Smedley’s son, also named John, was born 12 June 1803. The better-known of the Smedleys, Smedley junior become known as both an industrialist and a philanthropist. He began work as an apprentice and in 1825 took over the running of the mill and started an energetic expansion of its operations. Having diversified from cotton to wool and from weaving to knitting, young Smedley planned to produce a wide range of finished garments.
Smedley’s success and growing wealth enabled him to envisage and build other grand projects. Having developed an interest in hydrotherapy he developed and built Smedley’s Hydro in Matlock, a spa resort that has become one of Derbyshire’s most famous landmarks.
John Smedley junior passed away on 27th July 1874 and the business was then passed to his cousin, John T Marsden Smedley, and again on to John B Marsden Smedley. Having witnessed four John Smedley’s in succession, the business became a limited company in 1893.
John Smedley today has progressed far beyond the endeavours of any one man, indeed any four as the case may be. The family still control a majority stake in the business and they continue to make high quality, fine garments for the style-conscious individual.
