Remember, remember the fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot. The beginning to a chilling rhyme depicting the attempted assassination of a King and many members of parliament. We commemorate the fifth by lighting bonfires, burning effigies and shooting fireworks. It can be tricky navigating what to wear for such an occasion, needing to balance between style and warmth but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
The History of Guy Fawkes
In 1605, thirteen young men plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with intentions to kill King James I, the Prince of Wales and members of parliament who were making life difficult for the Catholics. The plot, however, was discovered when one of the young men wrote to their friend, Lord Monteagle, warning him to stay away from parliament on the 5th. On the morning of the 5th authorities stormed the cellar where Guy Fawkes, and 36 barrels of gunpowder were waiting. Guy Fawkes was caught, tortured and later executed. On the night that the Gunpowder plot was foiled, bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the King, and this is a tradition that has continued to this day along with burning effigies of Guy Fawkes.
Bonfire Night – What you should wear – Layering up!
Each year when November 5th comes around we can say with undoubtable certainty that it’s going to be a very cold night, despite the raging bonfire that will be burning. This is why layering up is essential on a night like this, which is why we have two different styles to help you keep warm and chic this November 5th.
First, a laid-back, casual look that is that’s perfect for spending the evening over a friend’s house. We recommend a black Sik Silk zip-hoodie, paired with black Sik Silk joggers. Nothing says style better than wearing a matching tracksuit. Pair this with an Ellesse Anthracite Lombardy Fade jacket and a pair of black Vans, you’re set for a stylish and warm evening.
If, however, you’re attending a big firework show and you’re looking for a more formal outfit, we’d recommend a pair of dark Levi’s jeans (navy or black will be best – especially if it’s muddy). Then, it’s up to you whether to pair these with a shirt or polo shirt depending on how dressed up the event is. To keep warm, we suggest a Tommy Hilfiger Hampton Down Bomber jacket. These jackets are ridiculously stylish and are bound to keep you warm, especially with a faux fur collar, and best of all is that they come in a range of colors. To complete the outfit, we would add a pair of Timberlands. Their waterproof material is perfect to help you combat any terrain whether it be pavement or grass.
