Currently, the summer season may feel like it’s a million miles away but as the weather is beginning to get warmer and a little brighter, we can see it on the horizon. To hopefully give you something to look forward to, we’ve put together this guide to summer styling for men in 2020, focusing on the top trends, to give you inspiration for dressing for the sun.
Whether you’re chilling at home, relaxing in the garden, or hopefully in the not too distant future, getting out and about, it’s important to feel good in the way you are dressed and equally important to keep cool when temperatures are rising.
This simple to execute guide to men’s summer styling includes everything you need to know to stay on-trend for summer 2020. Here are ten of the biggest men’s trends set to hit this summer.
This utilitarian trend is set to make a huge comeback this summer, with a slightly different take on the classic khaki baggy shorts with big pockets that are synonymous with the word ‘cargo’. Instead, you’ll find slimmer fit styles in a wide range of hues, from monotones and navies, to lighter pastels and pinks.
Some of our favourite men’s cargo shorts for this summer at Standout are the Lyle & Scott Cargo Shorts in Stone, £47.95, the Carharrt WIP Lawton Shorts in Black, £63.95 and Alpha Industries Crew Cargo Shorts in Rep Blue, £63.95. Checkout the full men’s cargo shorts collection at Standout.
Crisp white tees
A solid staple in every man’s wardrobe year-round, the crisp white tee is set to be a big player in summer wardrobes this year. The difference is in the quality however, so investing in two or three really good white cotton t-shirts will help you build many great looks across the season.
At Standout, we recommend the Vivienne Westwood New Class White T-Shirt, £63.95, complete with a fresh take on its signature orb logo. We also love the Solid Logo White T-Shirt from Gant, £33.95 and if you want to get all three of your tees in one go, then the Tommy Hilfiger Three-Pack Premium Essentials White T-shirts, £29.95, is a strong choice.
Many men may be afraid to rock a chunky sandal, but this trend is set to be big for this year and braving it is certain to pay off. When it comes to chunky sandals, Birkenstock is the obvious choice and here at Standout we have a huge selection of the classic Arizona sandals in various colourways and fabrics. To get that rustic look, we’d recommend the Birkenstock Arizona Oil Wash sandals in Habana, £74.95.
90’s style lightweight pants
Much like cargo shorts are making a comeback for 2020, as are cargo pants, but again with a new take on the style with refreshing colours and different features details such as cinch waists and pocketless variations.
We’re particularly huge fans of Alpha Industries range of cargo pants, with olive and stone tones fit for the season, and Carharrt WIP’s subtle grey slim fit cargos, £75.95.
Loud print shirts
Boxy shirts with vibrant prints are about to take off and the ‘louder’ the better in our opinion. Just be sure to pair with some slightly more understated trousers or shorts to ensure you pull it off in the chic way it’s intended, rather than looking a little too loud.
Our go-to’s for this trend are from designer menswear brand known for its stand-out graphic designs, Religion. Shop the Religion Savage Short Sleeved Shirt, £33.95 for a look that will take you from day to night seamlessly, worn open with a vest underneath or buttoned up with a pair of your finest cargo shorts. We also love the Religion Arrow Pocket Short Sleeve Shirt, £12.95.
Tank tops & vests
Featuring wild prints, large graphics, logo embroidery or just simple and plain-coloured, vests and tank tops are back in a big way. Go brave with a low cut neckline, don a classic basketball vest for breathable wear, or keep it simple with an oversized, white tank top.
A key trend in 2019, this one is going absolutely nowhere for the summer season of 2020. This daring style is an absolute must-have in hotter months and worn with a billowy open shirt, exaggerated orthopaedic sandals and a classic pair of black rimmed shades creates the perfect casual summer statement.
Standout.co.uk faves include the Religion Blitz Swim Shorts, £26.95 with contrasting animal and floral patterns, the Ellesse Bari Swim Shorts, £21.95 for a sporty look or for a toned down statement, the Emporio Armani Boxer Swim Shorts in white, £42.95.
One for the summer evenings when the chill hits, a long sleeve rugby top will have you right on-trend for all sundown activities. The bolder the better when it comes to this one too, with striking designs layered over the classic horizontal stripe style for an urban twist. Think clashing colours and contrasting sleeves to nail this casual look.
Autumn in spring
Normally in the hot summertime, we reach straight for the pastels and soft tones, but autumnal shades brought into spring/summer is set to be a hit this year. From light browns and oranges to deep purples and soft reds, mix it up to create a stand-out look and don’t be afraid to pair more than one of these hues together.
For some inspiration from the Standout site, look to the Superdry Sunscorched Chino Shorts in Ukon Gold, £31.95 and the Superdry Vintage EMB T-shirt in Red Twill, £11.95.
We hope this trend will never ever go fully out of style, and so far so good with its regular resurgences throughout the decades. Of course, the go-to double denim co-ord is the staple denim jacket and a solid pair of jeans, but don’t be afraid to switch things up with denim shorts, vests and even accessories too.
To build your doubled-up denim ensemble, take a look at our extensive denim jackets and jeans collection. The only thing to remember is, don’t let the shades of denim stray too far from another and you’ll be sure to get it right.
